Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of short-term psychodynamic therapy on psychological self-management and cognitive flexibility in cardiovascular patients in the city of Babol.
Methodology: The research method was quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design, including a control group. The statistical population comprised all individuals with cardiovascular disease who visited Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Babol over a three-month period (October, November, and December 2023). The sample size consisted of 34 men aged 60 and above with cardiovascular disease, who were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Data collection tools included the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010), the Psychological Self-Management Questionnaire (Molahasani & Barkhordar, 2007), and Davanloo’s short-term psychodynamic therapy protocol. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 28. To analyze the obtained data, examine all hypotheses, and determine the impact of the intervention on the experimental group, as well as to assess the difference in scores between the two groups from pre-test to post-test, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was employed.
Findings: The findings of the study indicated that short-term psychodynamic therapy had a significant effect on psychological self-management and cognitive flexibility in cardiovascular patients.
Conclusion: In conclusion, short-term psychodynamic therapy resulted in an increase in psychological self-management and cognitive flexibility among cardiovascular patients.
