Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of individuals with anxiety disorders in dealing with everyday stressors and to analyze their coping strategies in these situations.
Methods and Materials: This qualitative, phenomenological study collected data through semi-structured interviews with 24 individuals diagnosed with anxiety disorders. Participants were selected from Tehran, and data collection continued until theoretical saturation was reached. Data analysis was performed using Nvivo software, employing open coding techniques to identify themes and subthemes.
Findings: The results of the study revealed three main themes: coping strategies, emotional and psychological reactions, and everyday stressors. Participants used cognitive, emotional, and avoidant coping mechanisms to manage their stress. Emotional responses included heightened anxiety and mood fluctuations. Moreover, work-related, social, and familial pressures were identified as primary sources of stress in the daily lives of individuals with anxiety disorders.
Conclusion: This study showed that individuals with anxiety disorders employ a variety of coping strategies when facing everyday stressors, which can either help them manage anxiety or exacerbate it. The findings of this study can contribute to the design of more effective psychological interventions for these individuals.
