Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the factors influencing the reduction of social anxiety in adolescents through group counseling.

Methods and Materials: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection method. The participants were 15 adolescents diagnosed with social anxiety, selected via purposive sampling from Tehran. Data were analyzed using Nvivo software, and theoretical saturation was achieved during the data collection process.

Findings: The findings revealed five main factors influencing the reduction of social anxiety: increased self-esteem, coping skills, group social support, counseling characteristics, and positive social interactions. Specifically, coping skills and self-esteem had the greatest impact on reducing social anxiety. Group social support and the supportive environment in counseling groups also played significant roles in improving social status and reducing anxiety.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that group counseling can effectively reduce social anxiety in adolescents. Enhancing self-esteem, improving coping skills, and providing a supportive environment and positive social interactions through group counseling can help reduce social anxiety in adolescents.
