Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to provide a phenomenological analysis of the meaning of life and hope in individuals with chronic mental disorders.

Methods and Materials: This qualitative study was conducted using phenomenological analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 individuals diagnosed with chronic mental disorders living in Tehran. Data were analyzed using Nvivo software, and theoretical sampling was applied until theoretical saturation was reached.

Findings: The results indicated that the meaning of life for individuals with chronic mental disorders is constructed through the search for purpose, social connections, and personal growth. Moreover, hope for change and social support were found to be crucial factors in coping with challenges and improving the quality of life. However, feelings of worthlessness and helplessness were significant problems that negatively impacted hope and the sense of meaning in life.

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the meaning of life and hope play key roles in improving the mental well-being of individuals with chronic mental disorders. Treatment and support programs should focus on enhancing these aspects to help individuals cope better with their mental health challenges.
