Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the factors influencing the use of online counseling and its impact on reducing social anxiety.
Methods and Materials: This qualitative research utilized semi-structured interviews as the data collection tool. The participants included 16 individuals suffering from social anxiety who had used online counseling services. Purposeful sampling was conducted with residents of Tehran. After the interviews, the data were analyzed using NVivo software and thematic content analysis. The analysis process continued until theoretical saturation was reached.
Findings: The results revealed that online counseling led to a significant reduction in social anxiety among the participants. Key factors such as ease of access, privacy preservation, and a safer online environment were identified as important in reducing social anxiety. Participants also reported an increase in self-confidence and improved social skills. However, some participants noted technical issues and difficulties in non-verbal communication as limitations affecting the effectiveness of online counseling.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that online counseling can be an effective tool for reducing social anxiety, especially for individuals who lack access to in-person therapy. However, there is a need to improve technical infrastructure and facilitate more effective interactions on these platforms to enhance their effectiveness.
